Daily Devotion: What God Hates by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Proverbs 6:16-23 KJV

Key Verse:  "These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:"
- Proverbs 6:16 KJV

The Bible teaches us that God is love (1 John 4:16 ), but it also teaches us that there are things that God hates. The Bible provides a clear picture of what God hates, and understanding these things can help us live a life that is pleasing to Him. In this devotional, we will explore the Holy Scriptures that help us understand what God hates and why.

As noted in our Key Verse above, these six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
  1. A proud look: God hates pride, as it is a reflection of a heart that is self-centered and does not recognize His sovereignty. Instead, we should have a humble spirit and recognize our dependence on God.

  2. A lying tongue: God detests falsehood, as truthfulness is essential for building trust and maintaining healthy relationships. As Christians, we should strive to always speak the truth in love, by doing so we are a good testimony to those watching us.

  3. Hands that shed innocent blood: The taking of innocent life, whether through murder or abortion, is an abomination to God. We must work to protect the lives of the vulnerable and defend the innocent.

  4. A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations: God hates sinful thoughts and intentions, as they often lead to sinful actions. We must guard our hearts and minds, filling them with God's truth and seeking to align our thoughts with His will.

  5. Feet that are swift in running to mischief: God disapproves of hasty actions and decisions, as they often lead to further sin and destruction. We should strive to be slow to anger and quick to listen, seeking wisdom and guidance from God before acting.

  6. A false witness: God hates those who bear false witness against others, as it is a form of lying and can cause great harm to individuals and relationships. As Christians, we should strive to always speak the truth and defend others when they are wronged.

  7. He that soweth discord among brethren: God detests those who seek to divide and cause strife among believers, as it goes against the unity and love that He desires for His people. We must work to build each other up in our faith and seek reconciliation when conflicts arise.
In conclusion, understanding what God hates can help us live a life that is pleasing to Him and avoid the destructive consequences of sin. As we go about our daily lives, let us seek to align ourselves with God's values and avoid the things he hates, so that we can experience his blessing and protection. By cultivating a humble heart, speaking truth, protecting the innocent, guarding our thoughts, acting with wisdom, speaking truthfully, and promoting unity, we can honor God and experience the blessings of a life lived in obedience to Him.
