Daily Devotion: What Does The Bible Say About Narcissism (2 of 4) by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Proverbs 16:17-24 KJV

Key Verse:  "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."
Proverbs 16:18 KJV

The Bible does not explicitly use the term "narcissism," but it does address traits and behaviors associated with narcissism. According to biblical teachings, narcissistic traits such as grandiosity, lack of empathy, and the need for admiration are condemned.

For instance, pride and haughtiness are warned against, as they lead to destruction and downfall, as stated in Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." Additionally, the Bible emphasizes humility and servanthood over arrogance and entitlement, highlighting the importance of genuine love and compassion for others rather than self-serving relationships (1 Corinthians 13).

Moreover, the Bible teaches that selfish ambition and envy are destructive behaviors that lead to disorder and evil practices (James 3). Narcissistic behavior is linked to a sinful and selfish heart, which can be addressed through repentance and turning to Jesus Christ for freedom from sin (James 3).

A narcissist's sense of entitlement and unreasonable expectations of how others should treat them, is in stark contrast with Jesus. The Bible describes Jesus as a servant, particularly emphasizing his role of serving others rather than being served. This is highlighted in passages such as John 13, where Jesus washes his disciples' feet, demonstrating humility and servitude, setting an example for his followers to emulate. He did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many, as stated in Mark 10 and Luke 22.

In dealing with narcissists, biblical advice suggests setting boundaries, standing firm in the truth, and not wasting time trying to change someone who is unwilling to admit their faults or seek help (Galatians 4, 1 Corinthians 7). Narcissism can be severe and left unchecked it will not only destroy the narcissists, but also the enablers (people who reward bad behavior) they have assembled to feed their needs for admiration, entitlement and control.

Finally, the Bible warns that narcissistic tendencies will be prevalent in the last days, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and addressing these issues (2 Timothy 3).
