Daily Devotion: The Life of Jesus - Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Mark 9:17-25 KJV

Key Verse:  "Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth."
- Mark 9:23 KJV

Coming down from the mount of Transfiguration, Jesus enters a scene of chaos, a distressed father, suffering child, confused disciples, and a watching crowd. The disciples had tried to cast out the demon, but failed. The father’s plea is raw and honest: “If thou canst do any thing… help us.” Jesus gently turns the focus back to faith: “If thou canst believe…”

Then comes one of the most relatable cries in all of Scripture:
“Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”

This is the tension many of us live in, faith mixed with doubt. Yet Jesus does not reject this man. He meets him in that honest place and responds with power and compassion.

Jesus rebukes the spirit, and the boy is delivered. What the disciples could not do, Jesus accomplished with authority. Later, He explains that some spiritual battles require deeper dependence on God, “prayer and fasting.”

This passage reminds us that victory is not found in human strength or past success, but in ongoing reliance on God.

Life Application

  • Bring your struggles honestly to Jesus — even your doubts
  • Ask God to strengthen your faith
  • Depend on prayer in difficult situations
  • Trust in Jesus’ authority over every problem

Prayer

Lord, I believe, help my unbelief. Strengthen my faith where it is weak, and teach me to depend on You more deeply through prayer. I bring my struggles to You, trusting in Your power and compassion. Amen.
