Daily Devotion: The Parable of the Leaven (The Quiet Influence of the Kingdom) by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Matthew 13:33-35 KJV

Key Verse:  "Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened."
- Matthew 13:33 KJV

On another occasion, Jesus spoke again in a very simple image, something familiar to every household. He described a woman taking a small portion of leaven and hiding it within three measures of meal. At first, nothing about the mixture appeared different. The flour looked the same, the dough felt the same, and the change was invisible to the eye. But over time, something quiet and powerful began to happen. The leaven worked its way through the entire lump, until all of it was transformed.

With this brief parable, Jesus revealed another aspect of His kingdom, not its size, as in the mustard seed, but its influence. The work of God often happens beneath the surface, unseen and gradual, yet deeply effective. What begins in a hidden place does not remain isolated; it spreads, shaping and changing everything it touches.

This truth is reflected in the way God works within the heart. His Word does not merely inform, it transforms. Though the process may be quiet, it is thorough. As Paul writes, “A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” (Galatians 5:9 KJV). What is introduced, even in small measure, has the power to affect the whole.

There is also a call here to be mindful of what we allow into our lives. Just as godly influence can spread, so can that which is harmful. Scripture warns, “Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?” (1 Corinthians 5:6 KJV). The principle works both ways, what we permit to remain will eventually shape who we become.

Yet in the context of this parable, the emphasis is on the quiet, persistent work of God’s kingdom. It does not always announce itself with noise or spectacle. Often, it is hidden, working in thoughts, attitudes, desires, and daily choices. Over time, however, the evidence becomes undeniable.

God’s desire is not partial change, but complete transformation. “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Romans 12:2 KJV). Like leaven working through dough, His truth moves through every part of our lives, reshaping us from the inside out.

The beauty of this parable is its assurance: even when we cannot see it, God is at work. His kingdom is not stagnant or limited. It is living, active, and steadily advancing, within us and through us.

Prayer

Lord, work within me in ways I cannot always see. Let Your truth spread through every part of my life, my thoughts, my words, and my actions. Guard me from influences that would lead me away from You, and let Your Spirit fully transform me from the inside out. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Are you Saved?
