Daily Devotion: The Acts of the Apostles - Paul Travels to Jerusalem by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Acts 21:4-14 KJV

Key Verse:  "Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus." - Acts 21:13 KJV

Paul is making his way toward Jerusalem, and the believers along the way are deeply concerned about what awaits him. At Tyre, the disciples warn him not to go. Later, the prophet Agabus gives an even more dramatic warning. He takes Paul's belt, binds his own hands and feet, and declares that Paul will be bound by the Jews in Jerusalem and delivered into the hands of the Gentiles.

The believers plead with Paul not to go. But Paul is not unaware of the danger. He understands exactly what may happen.

His response is remarkable: “I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Paul's courage did not come from believing that nothing bad would happen. He knew suffering was coming.

His courage came from deciding that obedience to Christ was more important than personal safety.

There is a subtle but important lesson here. The warnings Paul received were not necessarily telling him that going to Jerusalem was outside God's will. Rather, they were preparing him for what he would face there.

Sometimes God doesn't warn us about difficulty so that we can avoid it. Sometimes He warns us so that we can prepare to remain faithful through it.

Paul understood that his life belonged to Christ. He had already said that he did not count his own life dear to himself. Now he demonstrates that conviction.

Eventually, those traveling with Paul stop trying to persuade him and simply said: “The will of the Lord be done.”

That should be the heart of every believer's prayer. Not, “Lord, make everything happen according to my wishes.” But: “The will of the Lord be done.”

Following God's will does not always mean the easiest path. Sometimes it means walking directly into circumstances we would rather avoid.

But when we know we are following Him, we can move forward without fear.

Paul's journey toward Jerusalem reminds us that faith is not the absence of fear, but it is choosing obedience despite fear.

Life Application

  • Don't assume difficulty means you are outside God's will
  • Ask God for courage rather than simply asking for an easy path
  • Be willing to obey Christ even when obedience is costly
  • Trust God when you cannot see what lies ahead
  • Make “Thy will be done” the attitude of your heart

Prayer

Lord, give me the courage of Paul when following You becomes difficult. Help me not to measure Your will by how comfortable or safe a path may be. When I face uncertainty, give me faith to move forward in obedience. Teach me to surrender my own plans and sincerely pray, “The will of the Lord be done.” May my life bring honor to the name of Jesus. Amen.
