Daily Devotion: The Acts of the Apostles - Paul Arrives in Rome by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Acts 28:16-31KJV

Key Verse:  "Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him." - Acts 28:31KJV

At last, Paul arrived in Rome. It had been a long and difficult journey. He had been beaten, imprisoned, falsely accused, threatened, shipwrecked, and bitten by a poisonous snake. Yet through every circumstance, God had preserved him and brought him exactly where He had promised he would go. But Paul did not arrive in Rome as a free man. He arrived as a prisoner.

That is an important reminder that God's promises do not always unfold according to the circumstances we would choose. Paul knew he was going to Rome, but he may not have imagined that he would reach Rome in chains.

Nevertheless, his chains could not chain the gospel.

Paul was allowed to live in his own rented house with a soldier guarding him. And instead of looking at his confinement as the end of his ministry, he turned his house into a place of ministry. People came to him, and Paul taught them about the kingdom of God and about Jesus Christ.

Some believed. Others did not. But Paul remained faithful.

That is how the book of Acts ends, not with the gospel being stopped, but with the gospel continuing to go forward.

There is something especially beautiful about those final words: “with all confidence, no man forbidding him.” Paul's circumstances were restricted, but God's Word was not.

Paul could be confined to a house, but the message of Christ could travel wherever those who heard it carried it. His freedom was limited, but his testimony was not. His circumstances were difficult, but his purpose remained unchanged.

We sometimes think we could serve God better if our circumstances were different. If I had more freedom... If I had more money... If I had better health... If I had more opportunities...

But Paul's life reminds us that God can use us exactly where He has placed us. The question is not always, “Why am I in this situation?” Sometimes the better question is, “Lord, how can I serve You in this situation?”

Paul had reached Rome, but the story of the gospel was far from finished. And that is fitting, because the work of proclaiming Jesus Christ was never meant to end with Paul, or with the book of Acts. The same gospel that began spreading from Jerusalem continued outward, carried by faithful believers who were willing to speak of Christ wherever God placed them.

Life Application

  • You may not be where you expected to be.
  • You may be facing limitations, disappointments, or circumstances that seem to restrict what you can accomplish. But remember Paul in Rome.
  • God's purpose for your life is not defeated simply because your circumstances are difficult.
  • Ask God to show you the opportunities He has placed right where you are.
  • Be faithful with the people He brings into your life. Speak of Christ when the opportunity comes. Teach His Word. Encourage others. And trust Him with the results.
  • Paul did not know everything God would accomplish through his imprisonment. He simply remained faithful.
  • We can do the same.
  • Our circumstances may change, but Christ remains worthy of our faithfulness.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank you for the example of Paul and for the faithfulness. Teach me to serve you faithfully wherever you place me. Give me courage to speak of Jesus Christ with confidence. Help me to trust you when your way is different from the way I expected. Let my life be a testimony that your Word cannot be bound. May I remain faithful, whether my circumstances are easy or difficult, knowing that you are always in control. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
