Daily Devotion: The The Early Church - Faithful Witnesseses by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Acts 1:1-8 KJV

Key Verse:  "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." - Acts 1:8 KJV

The book of Acts may have ended, but the mission Jesus gave His followers did not. The apostles had witnessed the resurrection of Christ. They had received the Holy Ghost. They had preached in Jerusalem, endured persecution, crossed cultural boundaries, and carried the gospel farther and farther into the world. And now the responsibility of being Christ's witnesses continues with every generation of believers.

The early Christians were not merely people who believed in Jesus. They were people whose lives had been changed by Jesus. They continued steadfastly in teaching, fellowship, prayer, and worship. They cared for one another. They endured opposition. And wherever they went, they told others about Christ.

Their confidence did not come from their own ability. It came from what they had seen and heard, and from the power of the Holy Ghost. Peter and John expressed it plainly: “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”

When Christ has truly become precious to us, there ought to be something within us that wants others to know Him too.

Being a witness does not necessarily mean standing before a crowd or preaching from a pulpit. Sometimes it means telling a friend what Christ has done for you. Sometimes it means answering a question about your faith. Sometimes it means quietly living in such a way that others can see the difference Christ makes.

The early Church reminds us that the gospel advances one faithful witness at a time. We may never know how far the influence of one testimony will reach. A word spoken to one person may encourage that person to speak to another. A life faithfully lived may influence a family. A prayer may affect someone we never even meet.

God sees the whole picture. Our responsibility is simply to be faithful.

Life Application

Ask yourself today: Am I still willing to be a witness for Christ?

We do not need to have all the answers. We do not need extraordinary abilities. We need a willing heart and a faithful testimony.

The apostles were ordinary men who had encountered an extraordinary Savior. And that is still enough.

Look for opportunities today to:

  • Speak a word of encouragement.
  • Tell someone what Jesus means to you.
  • Share Scripture with someone who needs hope.
  • Pray for an opportunity to point someone toward Christ.
  • Live in a manner that honors the Lord.

The world does not need Christians who merely carry the name. It needs Christians who live as witnesses.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank you for the faithful witnesses who carried the gospel throughout the book of Acts. Thank you that the message of salvation through Jesus Christ has reached us.

Help me to be a faithful witness in my own generation. Give me courage to speak when you provide an opportunity, wisdom to know what to say, and a life that reflects the Savior I profess to love.

Keep me steadfast in your Word, faithful in prayer, and willing to serve wherever you lead me. May others see Christ in my words, my actions, and my life.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Are you Saved?
