Key Verse: "And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome." - Acts 23:11 KJV
Paul has been arrested in Jerusalem and now stands before the Jewish council, the Sanhedrin. He begins by declaring: “I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.” Paul is not claiming that he has never sinned. Rather, he is saying that he has sincerely sought to live faithfully before God according to what he understood to be true.
But almost immediately, the meeting becomes hostile.
The high priest orders Paul to be struck. Paul then recognizes that the council is divided between Pharisees and Sadducees, particularly over the doctrine of the resurrection.
Paul declares that he is being judged because of “the hope and resurrection of the dead.” This creates a major dispute within the council. But beyond the argument and confusion, something much more important happens that night.
The Lord comes to Paul. Jesus tells him: “Be of good cheer, Paul.”
Then He gives Paul a promise: “As thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.”
Think about what Paul had experienced.
- He had been attacked by a mob.
- He had been arrested.
- He had been misunderstood.
- He had been threatened.
- Now he was facing an uncertain future.
Yet in the middle of all of it, the Lord stood by him. God did not merely give Paul information about the future. He gave him His presence and encouragement.
And He reminded Paul that his present circumstances were not the end of his ministry. Paul still had a testimony to give in Rome.
This is a powerful encouragement when we find ourselves in difficult circumstances. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but God does. Our circumstances may change suddenly, but God's purposes do not.
Paul could rest in the knowledge that Jesus had a purpose for his life that would continue despite opposition and imprisonment.
The Lord's words,“Be of good cheer” are especially meaningful because they came when Paul had every human reason to be discouraged.
God was reminding him:
- You are not alone.
- Your work is not finished.
- I am still with you.
That same truth can strengthen us today.
When circumstances seem to have closed every door, God may already be preparing the next one.
Life Application
- Maintain a clear conscience before God
- Stand firmly for the truth of the resurrection
- Don't let difficult circumstances convince you that God has forgotten you
- Remember that God's presence is more important than comfortable circumstances
- Trust that God can continue His purposes even when your plans change
Prayer
Lord, when I face uncertainty, remind me that You are with me. Help me maintain a clear conscience and remain faithful to Your truth. When circumstances discourage me, give me the same encouragement You gave Paul: “Be of good cheer.” Help me trust that You are still working, that Your purposes cannot be defeated, and that You will guide me wherever You want me to go. Amen.
