As the church continued to grow, opposition intensified. King Herod began to persecute believers, even executing James, the brother of John. Seeing that this pleased certain groups, he arrested Peter as well, intending to put him on trial after the Passover. Peter was heavily guarded in prison, bound with chains and watched by soldiers, his situation seemed hopeless.
But the church responded in the most powerful way they could: they prayed earnestly for him.
On the night before Peter’s trial, as he slept between two soldiers, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared, and a light shone in the cell. The angel struck Peter on the side to wake him and said, “Quick, get up!” Instantly, the chains fell off his wrists. Step by step, Peter followed the angel past the guards and through the prison gates, which opened on their own. Only after he was outside did Peter realize this was not a vision, God had truly rescued him.
Peter went to the house where many believers had gathered to pray. When he knocked, a servant named Rhoda answered the door. Overjoyed at hearing Peter’s voice, she ran back to tell the others, without opening the door! At first, they didn’t believe her, even though they had been praying for his release. But when they finally opened the door and saw Peter, they were amazed.
This account reminds us of the incredible power of prayer. Even when circumstances seem impossible, God is able to intervene in ways beyond our understanding. It also gently reveals our human nature, we can pray faithfully, yet still struggle to believe fully that God will answer.
Peter’s deliverance shows that God is sovereign over every situation. He can open doors no one can shut and break chains that seem unbreakable. At the same time, this story reminds us that God’s purposes are not always the same in every situation, James was martyred, while Peter was delivered. In both cases, God remained faithful and in control.

Prayer
Lord, strengthen my faith to trust You in every situation. Teach me to pray with persistence and expectation, believing that You hear and respond. When I face challenges, remind me that You are able to deliver, provide, and guide according to Your perfect will. Help me to trust You, no matter the outcome. Amen.
