After his dramatic encounter with Jesus and the restoration of his sight, Saul did not waste time. Almost immediately, he began to proclaim in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. The very man who once tried to destroy the church was now boldly defending the truth he had once opposed.
Those who heard him were astonished. “Isn’t this the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem?” they asked. Saul’s transformation was undeniable. Yet his bold preaching did not come without resistance. As his understanding grew stronger and his arguments more compelling, opposition intensified. Eventually, some plotted to kill him.
Saul’s journey reminds us that transformation often brings both purpose and challenge. When God changes a heart, He also gives a mission. Saul could not remain silent about what he had experienced. The truth of Jesus compelled him to speak, even when it placed him in danger.
In a moment of urgency, fellow believers helped Saul escape by lowering him in a basket through an opening in the city wall. It was a humbling experience—this once-powerful persecutor now depended on others for his safety. Yet God was shaping him, teaching him reliance, humility, and trust.
When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, the disciples were afraid to accept him. Understandably, they doubted the sincerity of his change. But Barnabas stepped in, advocating for Saul and sharing the story of his encounter with Jesus. Because of Barnabas’ encouragement, Saul was welcomed and continued to preach boldly.
This passage shows us the importance of both courage and community. Saul had the courage to proclaim Christ despite opposition, and Barnabas had the compassion to believe in Saul’s transformation and stand beside him.
God’s work in our lives is not only personal—it’s also communal. We need people who will support us, believe in us, and help us grow in our calling.
