Key Verse: "Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ." - Acts 17:3 KJV
After leaving Philippi, Paul and Silas arrive in Thessalonica. As was his custom, Paul goes to the synagogue and begins reasoning with the people from the Scriptures. His message centers on Jesus. Paul explains that the Messiah had to suffer, die, and rise again, and then makes the conclusion unmistakable: “This Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.”
Paul wasn't simply offering his personal opinion. He was showing from the Scriptures that Jesus fulfilled God's promises concerning the Messiah.
Some believed. Others did not. And once again, opposition arose.
Those who rejected Paul's message became jealous and stirred up a crowd against him and Silas. The hostility became so intense that the believers sent them away by night.
Once again, we see a pattern throughout Paul's ministry:
Preaching → belief → opposition → perseverance.
The presence of opposition did not mean the gospel was failing. In fact, the passage tells us that many people believed, including a great number of Gentiles and prominent women.
God's Word was accomplishing exactly what He intended.
There is another important lesson here: Paul knew the Scriptures.
His ability to explain the gospel came from understanding God's Word. He didn't simply tell people what he believed; he opened the Scriptures and showed them the truth.
That is an example worth following.
Our faith should not be based solely on emotion or tradition. We should know what God's Word says and be prepared to explain why we believe what we believe.
Paul also demonstrates perseverance. When one city rejects him, he doesn't conclude that his ministry is over. He moves on and continues preaching.
The gospel is bigger than one location, one audience, or one person's response.
Life Application
- Build your faith on the Word of God
- Know the Scriptures so you can explain your faith
- Expect that sharing truth may bring opposition
- Don't measure success solely by people's response
- Keep moving forward when one door closes
Prayer
Lord, give me a deeper hunger for Your Word. Help me understand Scripture so that I can recognize truth and share it with others. Give me courage when I encounter opposition and help me remain faithful when people reject the message. May my life and words continually point others to Jesus Christ. Amen.
