Key Verse: "And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples." - Acts 18:23 KJV
Paul's missionary journeys were not simply about reaching new people. They were also about strengthening people who had already believed. After returning to Antioch, Paul begins another journey. He travels through Galatia and Phrygia with a specific purpose: “Strengthening all the disciples.” This is an important reminder that Christian ministry involves both evangelism and discipleship.
It is wonderful when someone comes to faith in Christ, but that is not the end of the journey. New believers need teaching, encouragement, correction, and spiritual growth. Even mature Christians need strengthening.
Paul eventually reaches Ephesus, where he encounters some disciples who apparently have an incomplete understanding of the gospel. Paul patiently teaches them about Jesus, and they respond in faith.
This illustrates the importance of sound biblical teaching.
A person can be sincere and still have an incomplete understanding of God's truth. Paul did not ridicule these people or dismiss them. He taught them.
Their response was to receive the truth and move forward in their faith.
There is another encouraging lesson here: spiritual growth is a process.
None of us knows everything when we first come to Christ. We continue learning, growing, and being transformed by God's Word.
Paul's example also reminds us that we should care about the spiritual growth of other believers. We are not meant to walk the Christian life alone.
Sometimes God uses us to encourage someone else who is tired.
Sometimes He uses us to teach someone who is still learning.
Sometimes He simply asks us to come alongside another believer and say, “Keep going.”
The church becomes stronger when believers strengthen one another.
Life Application
- Continue growing after coming to Christ
- Study God's Word so that your understanding becomes deeper
- Be patient with those who are still learning
- Encourage other believers in their walk with Christ
- Remember that discipleship is a lifelong process
Prayer
Lord, thank You for patiently teaching and strengthening me. Help me never to stop growing in my understanding of Your Word. Give me opportunities to encourage other believers and to help those who are beginning their walk with Christ. Make me useful in strengthening Your church, and keep me faithful throughout the journey. Amen.
