Key Verse: "As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them." - Acts 13:2 KJV
The church at Antioch was growing and thriving, but God had something more in store. As the believers “ministered to the Lord, and fasted,” the Holy Ghost gave them a specific calling: Barnabas and Saul were to be set apart for a special work. Notice how this missionary journey began. It began with worship, prayer, fasting, and listening.
The church did not simply decide what it wanted to accomplish and then ask God to bless its plans. They sought God first. When the Holy Spirit directed them, they responded with obedience.
Barnabas and Saul were then sent out—not merely by the church, but “by the Holy Ghost.”
Their first destination was Cyprus, where they proclaimed the Word of God. Their journey was not without opposition. A sorcerer named Elymas attempted to turn the Roman governor away from the faith. Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost, boldly confronted him, and God demonstrated His power.
The governor witnessed what happened and believed.
This marks an important transition in Acts. Saul is now consistently called Paul, and his missionary ministry begins to take center stage. God was taking a former persecutor of Christians and using him to carry the gospel to the Gentile world.
What an amazing picture of God's grace.
The man who once tried to destroy the church was now helping build it.
God's calling may take us somewhere unexpected. It may require leaving what is familiar, facing opposition, or stepping into something we feel unqualified to do. But when God calls, He also provides what is needed to accomplish His purpose.
The question is not whether we are capable on our own.
The question is whether we are willing to listen and obey.
Life Application
- Seek God before making important decisions
- Be willing to follow wherever He leads
- Trust the Holy Spirit to equip you for His calling
- Remember that God can use anyone who is surrendered to Him
- Don't allow opposition to keep you from sharing the gospel
Prayer
Lord, help me to seek You before I make plans and decisions. Give me ears to hear Your direction and a heart willing to obey. When You call me to step outside my comfort zone, give me courage to follow. Use my life, just as You used Barnabas and Paul, to accomplish Your purposes and share the gospel with others. Amen.
