Key Verse: "But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?" - Acts 5:3 KJV
In the midst of the early church’s unity and generosity, a sobering moment unfolds. Ananias and Sapphira sell a piece of property, but secretly keep back part of the money while pretending to give it all. Their sin is not in withholding a portion, it was theirs to give, but in deception. They want the appearance of full devotion without the reality of it.
When Ananias presents the offering, Peter, led by the Holy Spirit, confronts him with the truth: “Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”
This is a serious reminder that God sees beyond outward actions, He sees the heart.
Immediately, Ananias falls down and dies. Later, Sapphira repeats the same deception and faces the same outcome. The result is clear: “Great fear came upon all the church.”
This moment may feel intense, but it reveals an important truth: God is holy, and He desires truth and integrity among His people.
The early church was being established, and God made it clear that hypocrisy and deceit had no place in a community built on truth.
This passage challenges us to examine our own hearts.
- Are we genuine in our faith?
- Do we seek to honor God, or to impress others?
- Are we honest in our relationship with Him?
God is not looking for perfection, but He does desire sincerity, humility, and truth.

- Be honest and sincere in your walk with God
- Avoid seeking approval from people over pleasing God
- Examine your motives regularly
- Live with reverence for God’s holiness
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that is not pleasing to You. Help me to live with honesty and integrity in all that I do. Teach me to honor You not just outwardly, but from a sincere and faithful heart. Amen.
