Key Verse: "And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch." - Acts 11:26 KJV
As persecution scattered the believers after Stephen’s death, what seemed like a setback became a powerful step forward. Those who were dispersed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, sharing the message of Jesus. At first, they spoke only to Jews, but soon some began preaching to Greeks also, spreading the good news beyond traditional boundaries.
God’s hand was clearly at work, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. When news reached the church in Jerusalem, they sent Barnabas to Antioch to see what was happening. What he found was evidence of God’s grace, and he rejoiced. Instead of trying to control or limit the work, Barnabas encouraged the believers to remain faithful to the Lord with all their hearts.
Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and through his encouragement, many people were added to the Lord. Recognizing the need for strong teaching, he went to Tarsus to find Saul and brought him back to Antioch. Together, they spent a whole year teaching and building up the church.
It was in Antioch that the disciples were first called “Christians.” This name reflected their identity as followers of Christ, shaped by His teachings and marked by His love.
During this time, a prophet named Agabus foretold a severe famine that would spread across the Roman world. In response, the disciples in Antioch demonstrated practical love and unity by deciding to send relief to the believers in Judea. Each gave according to their ability, and the gift was sent through Barnabas and Saul.
The church in Antioch serves as a beautiful example of what a healthy, growing church looks like—diverse, Spirit-led, grounded in teaching, and generous in action. It reminds us that growth is not just about numbers, but about transformation, encouragement, and care for one another.
