Daily Devotion: The Acts of the Apostles - The Riot in Ephesus by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Acts 19:20-35 KJV

Key Verse:  "So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed." - Acts 19:20 KJV

The gospel had made a tremendous impact in Ephesus. People were abandoning idolatry, turning to Christ, and changing the way they lived. As a result, the business surrounding the worship of the goddess Diana began to suffer. A silversmith named Demetrius recognized the threat, not primarily to his religion, but to his income. He gathered the craftsmen together and warned them that Paul's preaching was causing people to turn away from idols.

The result was a great disturbance throughout the city.

The crowd became so angry that they filled the theater, shouting: “Great is Diana of the Ephesians.”

Yet Luke makes an interesting observation: “The more part knew not wherefore they were come together.”

In other words, many people were caught up in the excitement without even understanding what the dispute was about.

This is a picture of how easily a crowd can be influenced by emotion, anger, and self-interest.

But underneath the riot was something deeper: the gospel was challenging the idols that controlled people's lives.

That is what the gospel does.

Jesus does not simply ask us to add Him to everything else we already value. He calls us to recognize Him as Lord.

Whenever the truth of Christ confronts something that has become an idol, whether money, possessions, reputation, power, pleasure, or even our own desires, there can be resistance.

The people of Ephesus had built an entire economy around their idolatry. When the gospel began changing hearts, it affected their way of life.

This reminds us that genuine faith should make a difference.

If following Christ never challenges anything in our lives, we should ask ourselves whether we have truly allowed Him to be Lord.

At the same time, Paul's example shows us that Christians don't need to respond to hostility with hostility. Paul did not create the riot. The gospel was being proclaimed faithfully, and God remained sovereign over the situation.

The city was in an uproar, but God's Word continued to prevail.

Life Application

  • Examine your life for anything that has become an idol
  • Don't allow money or possessions to become more important than God
  • Be careful not to be swept along by anger or emotion
  • Stand faithfully for Christ without responding to hostility with hatred
  • Remember that God's truth can transform entire communities

Prayer

Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that has taken a place that belongs only to You. Help me value You above money, possessions, reputation, and worldly success. Give me wisdom when I encounter anger or opposition, and help me respond with grace and truth. May Your Word continue to prevail in my life and in the lives of those around me. Amen.

Are you Saved?
