Daily Devotion: The Acts of the Apostles - Paul Says Farewell to the Ephesian Elders by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Acts 20:18-28 KJV

Key Verse:  "But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God." - Acts 20:24 KJV

Paul is on his way to Jerusalem, and he knows that difficult days are ahead. Rather than returning to Ephesus, he sends for the elders of the church and meets with them at Miletus. This is an emotional farewell. Paul reminds them of the way he served among them, with humility, tears, perseverance, and faithfulness. He had not kept back anything that would benefit them. He had taught them publicly and privately, proclaiming repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul's ministry was not merely a job. It was a calling.

And now he says something that reveals the depth of his commitment: “Neither count I my life dear unto myself.”

Paul's goal was not simply to survive. His goal was to finish his course.

He understood that his life belonged to Christ, and he wanted to complete the ministry God had given him.

This is a powerful challenge for us. The Christian life is not merely about beginning well. It is about finishing faithfully.

Paul also gives the Ephesian elders a solemn responsibility: “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock.”

Before they could care for others, they needed to watch over their own spiritual lives. That principle applies to all of us. We cannot effectively encourage others spiritually if we are neglecting our own relationship with God.

Paul also reminds them that ministry involves caring for people. The church is described as a flock, and those entrusted with leadership are called to watch over it.

Then Paul recalls the words of Jesus: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Paul's life demonstrated that principle. He had given his time, energy, comfort, and eventually much of his freedom for the sake of the gospel.

His example challenges us to ask: What am I living for?

  • A comfortable life?
  • Personal success?
  • Recognition?
  • Or to faithfully complete the work God has given me?

We may not have Paul's particular calling, but every believer has a purpose in God's kingdom. The goal is not to compare our course with someone else's.

The goal is to finish our own course faithfully.

Life Application

  • Seek to finish your Christian journey faithfully
  • Put Christ's purposes above personal comfort
  • Take care of your own spiritual life
  • Encourage and care for other believers
  • Give generously of your time, abilities, and resources
  • Remember that faithfulness matters more than recognition

Prayer

Lord, help me to live my life with the same determination Paul demonstrated. Keep me faithful to the calling You have given me. Help me not to become distracted by comfort, recognition, or worldly success. Give me the strength to finish my course with joy and to faithfully proclaim the gospel of Your grace. Teach me to care for others and to remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Amen.

Are you Saved?
