Key Verse: "For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)" - Romans 5:17 KJV
Romans 5 introduces one of Scripture's most profound contrasts. Paul places Adam and Jesus Christ side by side. Through Adam came sin and death. Through Christ comes grace, righteousness, and life.
Paul explains: “By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin.” Adam's disobedience in the Garden of Eden had consequences far beyond Adam himself. Sin entered the human experience, and death followed.
The world we live in bears the marks of that fall.
- Suffering.
- Death.
- Broken relationships.
- Temptation.
- Sin.
The consequences of humanity's rebellion against God are everywhere. But Paul doesn't spend this passage simply explaining how sin entered the world.
His greater purpose is to show us that what Christ accomplished is greater than what Adam lost.
One Man's Disobedience
Paul says: “By one man's disobedience many were made sinners.” Adam's failure brought condemnation and death. But then Paul contrasts it with Christ: “By the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”
- Adam disobeyed. => Christ obeyed.
- Adam's sin brought death. => Christ's righteousness brings life.
- Adam reached for what God had forbidden. => Jesus willingly surrendered Himself and obeyed the Father's will, even unto death.
Paul wants us to see the magnitude of Christ's work.
Grace Is Greater
One of the most beautiful statements in this passage is: “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.”
That does not mean sin is unimportant. It means that God's grace is greater than the sin that separates us from Him.
We should never minimize sin. But neither should we minimize grace. Sometimes people look at their past and think:
- “I've done too much.”
- “God couldn't forgive someone like me.”
- “I've gone too far.”
Romans 5 says otherwise. Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.
There is no sin that is greater than the saving power of Christ for the repentant believer.
The Gift of Righteousness
Paul calls righteousness a gift. That is important. A gift is not something you earn. You receive it.
Salvation is God's gracious gift through Jesus Christ. We don't stand before God saying, “Look at what I have accomplished.” We stand before Him saying, “Look at what Christ has accomplished.”
- That changes everything.
- It removes our boasting.
- It gives us humility.
- And it gives us hope.
From Death to Life
Paul says that those who receive God's grace and the gift of righteousness will: “Reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”
The gospel is not merely about escaping punishment after death. Christ gives us a new relationship with God now.
He gives us a new identity.
- A new purpose.
- A new hope.
- A new direction.
The believer is no longer under the dominion of sin. Christ has brought us from death toward life.
And one day, the believer will experience the fullness of that life in the presence of God.
Life Application
Don't allow your past to become greater in your mind than God's grace.
- Your sin may be serious. But God's grace is greater.
- Your failures may be many. But Christ's righteousness is sufficient.
- Your past cannot be changed. But through Christ, your future can be transformed.
If you have trusted Jesus Christ, don't live as though you are still condemned. Live as someone who has received “the gift of righteousness.”
And when you are tempted to believe that you are beyond God's reach, remember: “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.”
Grace doesn't give us permission to continue in sin. Grace gives us the power and freedom to leave sin behind.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank you for the grace you have given through Jesus Christ. Thank you that although sin brought death into the world, Jesus came to bring forgiveness, righteousness, and life.
Help me never to underestimate the seriousness of sin, but also never to underestimate the greatness of your grace.
When I remember my past failures, remind me of what Christ has accomplished for me. Keep me from shame, pride, and despair. Help me live as someone who has received your gift of righteousness.
Give me strength to turn away from sin and to follow Jesus faithfully. Thank you that your grace is greater than my failures.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
