Key Verse: "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" - Romans 3:10 KJV
Paul has spent the first two chapters of Romans showing that both Jew and Gentile have a serious problem. The Gentiles have sinned against the light they received. The Jews possess God's law, but possessing the law does not automatically make them righteous.
Now Paul brings everything together with a devastating conclusion: “There is none righteous, no, not one.” That statement leaves no room for human boasting.
Nobody can stand before God and say, “I am good enough.” Nobody can claim salvation because of family background, religious heritage, moral behavior, Bible knowledge, or good works.
Paul makes the issue even clearer: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Notice the word all. That includes you. It includes me.
It includes the religious person and the irreligious person. It includes the respectable person and the openly sinful person. Every human being has fallen short of God's perfect standard.
The Law Reveals Our Sin
Paul explains that the law cannot save us. Instead: “By the law is the knowledge of sin.” God's law functions like a mirror. A mirror can show us that our face is dirty, but it cannot wash our face.
In the same way, God's law reveals our sin, but the law itself cannot remove our guilt. When we honestly examine ourselves in the light of God's holiness, we discover that we have fallen short.
This is not a message designed to destroy our hope. It is designed to destroy our self-righteousness. Before we can appreciate how wonderful salvation is, we must understand how desperately we need it.
But Now...
Then Paul uses two of the most encouraging words in Romans: “But now...” Those words change everything. Paul has just shown us humanity's guilt. Now he begins to reveal God's answer. “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested.”
Our righteousness cannot come from keeping the law perfectly because none of us has done that. Instead, God has provided righteousness through Jesus Christ. That is the heart of the gospel.
We are not saved because we have successfully climbed our way up to God. God came down to us through His Son.
Justified Freely
Paul continues: “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” — Romans 3:24
Justified. What a wonderful word. To be justified is to be declared righteous before God. And Paul says this justification is freely given by God's grace.
- We cannot earn it.
- We cannot purchase it.
- We cannot achieve it through religious performance.
It comes through Jesus Christ. That should humble us, but it should also fill us with gratitude.
The same chapter that tells us “there is none righteous” also tells us that God has made a way for sinners to be justified.
Our sin is real. God's judgment is real. But so is God's grace.
No Room for Boasting
Paul asks: “Where is boasting then? It is excluded.” — Romans 3:27
If salvation were something we accomplished ourselves, we could boast about it. But because salvation is God's gift, all glory belongs to Him.
A Christian cannot say, “God saved me because I was better than other people.” The gospel says something completely different:
I was a sinner who could not save myself, but God saved me through Jesus Christ.
That leaves us with gratitude rather than pride. And it should change the way we look at other people. Instead of looking down on those who are struggling with sin, we should remember where we ourselves stood apart from God's grace.
We were not saved because we deserved it. We were saved because God is merciful.
Life Application
Romans 3 calls us to abandon every attempt to establish our own righteousness before God. If you have trusted Christ for salvation, remember that your confidence is not in your goodness.
It is in His righteousness.
- When you fail, don't run away from God in shame. Run toward Him in repentance.
- When you succeed, don't become proud. Give Him the glory.
- When you see someone else struggling, don't assume you are better than they are. Remember that you too are dependent upon God's grace.
When Satan reminds you of your failures, remember the gospel: Your salvation rests upon Christ, not upon your ability to be perfect.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank you for showing me the truth about my sin and my need for You. I know that I cannot make myself righteous through my own efforts. Thank you for sending Jesus Christ to provide the salvation I could never earn.
Help me to live with humility and gratitude. When I fail, help me turn to You instead of hiding in shame. When I succeed, keep me from becoming proud.
Help me treat others with mercy because I know how much mercy You have shown me. Let me place my confidence completely in Jesus Christ and His finished work.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
