Daily Devotion: The Book of Romans - The Law and the Heart by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Romans 2:13-29 KJV

Key Verse:  "(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified." - Romans 2:13 KJV

Paul now moves from the problem of judging others to a deeper problem: religious appearance without inward obedience. The Jewish people had been entrusted with the law of God. They had God's commandments. They had the Scriptures. They knew what God required.

But Paul makes an important distinction: “For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.” Simply hearing God's Word is not the same as obeying it.

That truth reaches far beyond the people Paul was addressing. It is possible to hear Scripture week after week and never allow it to change us.

  • We can know Bible verses.
  • We can understand doctrine.
  • We can discuss theological questions.
  • We can even recognize what is right and what is wrong.

But God is concerned not merely with what we know, instead He is concerned with what we do with what we know.

James gives us a similar warning: “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” — James 1:22

God's Word was never intended merely to fill our minds. It is intended to transform our lives.

The Law Written in the Heart

Paul makes a fascinating statement concerning the Gentiles: “The work of the law written in their hearts.” Even those who did not possess the written law had a conscience that testified concerning right and wrong.

God has given mankind a moral awareness. Our conscience can accuse us when we do wrong and provide an inner witness when we do what is right.

But conscience itself is not the Savior.

  • A conscience can be ignored.
  • It can be hardened.
  • It can even become distorted.

That is why we need God's revealed Word to instruct and correct us. The conscience can tell us that something is wrong, but God's Word tells us what is true.

Outward Religion and Inward Reality

Paul then uses circumcision to make a larger spiritual point. Circumcision was an important sign of God's covenant with Israel. But Paul says that outward religious identity by itself is insufficient. “Circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter.”

God has always cared about the heart. Long before Romans was written, the Old Testament repeatedly taught this truth. Samuel learned it when God rejected the outward appearance of Jesse's sons: “For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7

God is not impressed merely by outward religious appearance.

  • He wants the heart.
  • He wants genuine faith.
  • He wants obedience that flows from love for Him.

The Danger of Knowing Without Doing

There is a subtle danger in Bible study itself. The more Scripture we know, the easier it can become to assume that knowledge equals spiritual maturity.

But Scripture is not given merely so that we can know more. It is given so that we might know God and walk with Him.

The purpose of God's Word is not simply to make us knowledgeable Christians. It is to make us faithful Christians.

Jesus said: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15 Obedience does not purchase salvation. Rather, genuine faith produces a desire to obey the One who has saved us.

Life Application

Today's lesson invites us to look beyond our outward religious life and ask:

  • What is happening in my heart?
  • Do I merely hear God's Word, or do I obey it?
  • Do I know what Scripture says, but resist applying it to myself?
  • Do I appear faithful outwardly while neglecting God inwardly?

The answer should not lead us to despair. It should lead us to Christ. God already knows our hearts. We do not need to pretend before Him.

We can come honestly and pray: “Lord, show me what needs to change in me.” Then, when He reveals something through His Word, we should respond with obedience.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank you for your Word and for the truth that you have given us. Help me not merely to hear your Word, but to obey it. Search my heart and reveal anything within me that is not pleasing to you.

Keep me from being satisfied with outward appearances while neglecting inward obedience. Give me a heart that loves you and desires to follow your commandments. Help me to remember that true righteousness is not a matter of appearance, reputation, or religious performance. I need your grace every day.

Make your Word alive in my heart and evident in my life.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Are you Saved?
