Daily Devotion: The Acts of the Apostles - Paul Survives the Shipwreck and Reaches Malta by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Acts 28:1-9 KJV

Key Verse:  "And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita." - Acts 28:1 KJV

Paul and everyone aboard the ship have survived the terrible storm and shipwreck, just as God promised. They discover that they have reached the island of Melita, commonly identified with Malta. The people of the island show remarkable kindness to the shipwreck survivors. They build a fire to warm them from the rain and cold. Paul, rather than simply standing by, gathers sticks for the fire. Then something unexpected happens.

A poisonous viper comes out of the bundle and fastens itself onto Paul's hand.

The islanders immediately assume that Paul must be guilty of some terrible crime. They believe that although he survived the sea, divine judgment has now caught up with him. But Paul shakes the snake into the fire and suffers no harm.

The people wait for him to swell up or die. Nothing happens. Their opinion quickly changes.

This event demonstrates God's protection of Paul, but there is something else worth noticing. Paul had just survived a violent storm and shipwreck. Now, immediately afterward, he faces another danger.

Sometimes one trial seems to follow another. We may think, “Surely I've been through enough.”  But Paul's example reminds us that we don't have to know what the next difficulty will be in order to trust God.

The Lord had promised that Paul would reach Rome.

  • A storm couldn't stop him.
  • A shipwreck couldn't stop him.
  • A poisonous snake couldn't stop him.

God's purpose for Paul's life was still unfolding. But Paul didn't spend his time simply waiting for the next miracle. As soon as he reaches Malta, he begins serving others.

When Publius's father becomes sick, Paul prays for him and he is healed. Other sick people on the island come as well, and Paul ministers to them.

Even after everything Paul had endured, he continued serving. That is an important characteristic of Christian faithfulness. We don't serve God only when life is easy.

We don't stop being useful because we've been through a difficult season. Paul's circumstances changed repeatedly, but his purpose remained the same: to testify about Jesus Christ.

The shipwreck had brought Paul to an island he never intended to visit. Yet God had people there who needed to hear about Him. Sometimes God brings us into circumstances we never planned because He has opportunities waiting for us there.

We may not understand why a particular door opened, why a plan changed, or why we ended up in an unexpected place. But God may already know exactly whom He intends for us to reach.

Life Application

  • Trust God's protection even when danger comes unexpectedly
  • Don't assume every difficulty means God has abandoned you
  • Continue serving others even after going through hardship
  • Look for divine opportunities in unexpected circumstances
  • Remember that God's purposes for your life are greater than your circumstances

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness through every storm and every unexpected trial. Help me trust You when one difficulty seems to follow another. Give me eyes to see the opportunities You place before me, even in circumstances I did not choose. Like Paul, help me continue serving others and pointing them toward You wherever You lead me. Amen.

Are you Saved?
