Daily Devotion: The Acts of the Apostles - Paul Is Arrested in the Temple

Bible Reading: Acts 21:30-40 KJV

Key Verse:  "Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul." - Acts 21:32 KJV

Paul's arrival in Jerusalem has now taken a dramatic turn. He came to the city knowing that suffering awaited him. He had already been warned repeatedly, yet he remained determined to follow the Lord's leading. Now, while he is in the temple, some Jews from Asia recognize him and begin accusing him of teaching against the Jewish people, the Law, and the temple. They also falsely accuse him of bringing Gentiles into the temple.

The accusations quickly stir up the entire city. Paul is seized and dragged from the temple, and the mob intends to kill him.

Once again, the Roman authorities intervene. The chief captain takes Paul into custody and orders him to be bound with chains.

From a human perspective, Paul's situation looks like a terrible defeat. He had gone to Jerusalem to serve God. Now he is beaten, arrested, and treated as a criminal.

But Paul knew something the mob did not understand: His circumstances had not taken God by surprise. Paul had already said that he was willing to be bound, or even to die, for the name of Jesus.

His commitment to Christ did not depend upon comfortable circumstances. This is one of the most challenging aspects of Paul's example. We sometimes assume that if we are doing God's will, everything should go smoothly. But Scripture does not promise that.

Paul was doing exactly what God had called him to do, and yet he was arrested. Faithfulness does not always lead to immediate success or comfort. Sometimes faithfulness leads us directly into difficulty.

Yet God can use those difficult circumstances for His purposes. Paul's arrest would eventually provide opportunities for him to testify before rulers, governors, kings, and ultimately in Rome.

What appeared to be a setback was actually becoming another platform for the gospel. Paul's response is also remarkable. When given an opportunity to speak, he does not use it merely to complain about how badly he has been treated.

He wants to tell people about Jesus. That is the mark of a life surrendered to Christ. Even when Paul is the prisoner, the gospel remains free.

Life Application

  • Don't assume difficulties mean you have missed God's will
  • Remain faithful when obedience becomes costly
  • Trust God when circumstances seem completely out of control
  • Look for opportunities to testify about Christ in difficult situations
  • Remember that God can use apparent setbacks for His purposes

Prayer

Lord, give me the courage and faithfulness of Paul. When following You becomes difficult, keep me from assuming that You have abandoned me. Help me trust Your purposes even when I cannot understand my circumstances. Give me opportunities to speak about Jesus, especially when life is difficult, and help me remain faithful regardless of the cost. Amen.
