Daily Devotion: The Acts of the Apostles - Paul Sails for Rome by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Acts 27:14-25 KJV

Key Verse:  "Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me." - Acts 27:25 KJV

Paul is finally on his way to Rome. Jesus had promised him that he would bear witness in Rome, and now that promise is being fulfilled—but the journey is anything but easy. A violent storm strikes the ship. For many days, the passengers see neither sun nor stars. The storm becomes so severe that “all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.”

Imagine being on that ship. No land in sight. No way to control the weather. No clear idea where you are. No human reason to believe that the situation will improve. Yet in the middle of this terrifying circumstance, Paul receives a message from God: “Fear not, Paul.”

God reminds him that he must stand before Caesar, and then gives him an extraordinary assurance: “God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.” Paul believes God.

That is why he can tell the others: “Be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.”

Notice what Paul does not say. He doesn't say, “There is nothing to worry about.” He doesn't deny the storm. He doesn't pretend that everything looks fine. The storm is real. The danger is real. But God's promise is greater than the storm. That is a valuable lesson for our own lives.

Faith does not mean pretending that problems don't exist. Faith means believing God even when the circumstances around us appear to contradict His promises.

Paul's confidence was not based upon the strength of the ship. It wasn't based upon favorable weather. It wasn't based upon human ability. It was based upon the faithfulness of God.

And God's promise proved true. The ship was destroyed, but every person aboard survived. God didn't preserve the ship. He preserved the people.

Sometimes we ask God to preserve our circumstances when His greater purpose is to preserve us through them. We may lose things. Plans may change. The journey may become frightening and uncertain. But God's purposes remain secure.

Paul's journey to Rome demonstrates something we've seen repeatedly throughout Acts: God's will cannot be stopped by opposition, imprisonment, storms, or circumstances.

Paul was going to Rome because God had ordained that he testify there. The storm could delay him. It could destroy the ship. But it could not destroy God's promise.

Life Application

  • Believe God even when circumstances look hopeless
  • Don't confuse faith with pretending that difficulties aren't real
  • Remember that God's promises are more dependable than your circumstances
  • Trust God when your plans are suddenly disrupted
  • Encourage others who are frightened or discouraged
  • Remember that God may preserve you through a trial rather than remove the trial

Prayer

Lord, help me to believe You when circumstances are frightening and uncertain. When the storms of life make me feel that all hope is gone, remind me that Your promises remain true. Give me the faith to say with Paul, “I believe God.” Help me encourage others who are struggling and trust You with whatever lies ahead. Amen.

Are you Saved?
