Key Verse: "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;" - Romans 1:18 KJV
After declaring the wonderful news that the gospel is “the power of God unto salvation,” Paul now explains why salvation is necessary. The answer is sin. Romans 1 presents a sobering picture of humanity's rejection of God. Paul says that God's wrath is revealed against “all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.”
God's wrath is not like human anger. It is not uncontrolled, spiteful, or vindictive. God's wrath is His righteous response to sin.
God is holy. Because He is holy, He cannot simply pretend that sin does not matter.
But notice something important in Paul's argument: humanity has not been left without knowledge of God. Paul says: “God hath shewed it unto them.”
Then he points to creation itself. The heavens, the earth, the order of creation, and the world around us testify that there is a Creator.
David expressed this truth beautifully:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
— Psalm 19:1
Yet Romans tells us that people can know about God and still refuse to honor Him. That is where sin becomes especially serious.
When Thanksgiving Disappears
Romans 1:21 says: “Neither were thankful.” That little phrase carries enormous weight.
Paul connects humanity's rejection of God with a failure to give Him thanks. When we recognize that everything we have ultimately comes from God, gratitude becomes an act of worship.
But when we stop acknowledging God, something begins to change within us. Paul says that humanity's thinking became “vain,” and their hearts became “darkened.”
This is the downward progression of sin: when people reject the truth they have been given, they become increasingly willing to exchange God's truth for their own ideas.
Paul later says: “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator.” — Romans 1:25
The problem is not that God has failed to reveal Himself. The problem is that humanity has repeatedly chosen to turn away from Him.
A Warning for Every Heart
Romans 1 is not merely a description of ancient society. It is a warning to every human heart.
- We must never become so familiar with God's blessings that we stop being thankful for them.
- We must never allow God's truth to become something we acknowledge with our lips while ignoring it with our lives.
- And we must never assume that we are righteous simply because we can identify the sins of others.
Paul is building toward a very important conclusion in Romans: Every person needs the grace of God.
- The religious person needs it.
- The immoral person needs it.
- The respectable person needs it.
- The sinner needs it.
- And I need it.
That is why the gospel is such good news.
Romans will first show us the depth of our problem, but then it will show us the greatness of God's provision in Jesus Christ.
Life Application
Take time today to consider three simple questions:
- Am I thankful to God?
- Am I honoring God with what I know to be true?
- Am I allowing anything to take God's rightful place in my life?
Gratitude is more than saying, “Thank You, Lord,” occasionally.
A thankful heart recognizes God's hand in everyday life.
- Thank Him for His salvation.
- Thank Him for His Word.
- Thank Him for His mercy.
- Thank Him for the people He has placed in your life.
And most of all, thank Him that although we are sinners who cannot save ourselves, He provided a Savior.
Romans will take us from the darkness of human sin toward the glorious light of God's grace.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Help me to see the seriousness of sin as you see it. Keep me from becoming comfortable with things that dishonor you. Forgive me for the times I have taken your blessings for granted or failed to give you the honor and thanksgiving you deserve.
Give me a heart that loves your truth and desires to obey your Word. Thank you for revealing yourself through your creation and through your Word. And thank you above all for Jesus Christ, who provides the salvation that I could never earn for myself.
Keep my heart humble, thankful, and faithful before you.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
