Daily Devotion: The Book of Romans - Justified by Faith by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Romans 3:24-31 KJV

Key Verse:  "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law." - Romans 3:28 KJV

Romans 3 has brought us to a humbling truth: none of us is righteous on our own. We have all sinned. We have all fallen short. And the law cannot save us because none of us has kept it perfectly. So how can a sinful person ever stand righteous before a holy God?

Paul gives us the answer: “A man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.” This is at the very heart of the gospel.

What Does “Justified” Mean?

To be justified means to be declared righteous before God. It does not mean that we have never sinned. It does not mean that we have earned God's favor through good behavior. It means that God, through Jesus Christ, provides the righteousness we could never provide for ourselves.

Think about the difference between earning something and receiving a gift. If you work for something, you receive what is owed to you. But salvation is not a debt God owes us.

Paul says: “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.”

Salvation is God's gift of grace received through faith. That eliminates boasting.

We cannot say, “God saved me because I was good enough.” We can only say: “God saved me because He is gracious.”

Abraham Believed God

Paul turns to Abraham as his example. Abraham lived long before the Law of Moses was given. Therefore, Abraham could not have been justified by keeping the Mosaic law.

Instead: “Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” Abraham trusted God's promise. His righteousness was counted through faith.

This is enormously important because it shows that God's plan of salvation has always centered upon faith in Him rather than human achievement. Abraham's faith was not merely intellectual agreement.

He trusted God enough to act upon what God had told him. Faith believes God's Word and rests upon God's character.

Faith Does Not Mean We Don't Obey

There is sometimes a misunderstanding about justification by faith. If we are saved by faith and not by works, does that mean our actions don't matter? Absolutely not.

Good works are not the root of salvation, but they become a fruit of genuine faith. A person who truly trusts Christ should desire to follow Him. James says: “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” — James 2:17

Paul is not teaching that Christians should live however they please. He is teaching that our good works cannot purchase our salvation. We obey God because we have been saved, not in order to make God save us.

Peace With God

Romans 5:1 gives us the wonderful result: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Peace with God is much more than simply feeling calm.

It means that the hostility created by sin has been dealt with through Christ. We no longer have to live trying to earn God's acceptance.

In Christ, we can rest in what He has already accomplished. What a tremendous burden that removes.

We don't have to spend our lives wondering whether we have done enough to earn salvation. Christ has done what we could never do.

Life Application

Ask yourself today: Where is my confidence for salvation?

  • Is it in my church attendance?
  • My baptism?
  • My morality?
  • My Bible knowledge?
  • My generosity?
  • My good works?
  • Or is my confidence in Jesus Christ?

Those things can be good and important, but none of them can replace faith in Christ. If you have trusted Jesus, let this truth produce gratitude rather than pride.

You didn't save yourself. God saved you. And because salvation is His gift, He deserves all the glory.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank you for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. I know that I could never earn righteousness by my own efforts. Help me to place my complete trust in Christ rather than in my own goodness or accomplishments.

Thank you that I can have peace with You because of what Jesus has done for me. Give me a faith that is genuine and active. Help my obedience and good works flow from love and gratitude rather than from an attempt to earn Your favor.

Keep me humble, thankful, and completely dependent upon Your grace.

In Jesus' name,
Amen.

Are you Saved?
