Daily Devotion: The Parable of the Lost Coin (The Diligent Seeker)

Bible Reading: Luke 15:8-10 KJV

Key Verse:  "Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?"
- Luke 15:8 KJV

Jesus continued with another story, closely tied to the lost sheep and the prodigal son, each revealing a different angle of God’s heart toward the lost. He spoke of a woman who had ten pieces of silver. These coins were not insignificant; each one held value, and together they likely represented something precious, perhaps even part of her savings or personal treasure. But one of them was lost.

The loss of a single coin may not have seemed like much to others. After all, she still had nine. But to her, the loss mattered.

So she lit a candle, swept the house, and searched carefully, diligently, intentionally, until she found it.

The search was not passive. It required effort, focus, and persistence. The coin could not return on its own; it had no awareness of its condition. Yet the one who lost it took full responsibility to seek it out.

And when she finally found it, her response was not quiet relief, it was joy. She called her friends and neighbors together, saying, “Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.” (Luke 15:9 KJV).

Jesus then draws the connection: “Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” (Luke 15:10 KJV).

This parable reveals something beautiful and often overlooked: God’s pursuit is not only compassionate (as with the shepherd), but also careful and intentional. Nothing is overlooked. No one is forgotten. Even those who may seem hidden, unnoticed, or spiritually unaware are still deeply valued by Him.

Scripture affirms this truth: “The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.” (Psalm 145:9 KJV)

There is also a sense of light in this parable. The woman lights a candle to search. In the same way, God’s truth shines into the dark places where things are lost. “The entrance of thy words giveth light…” (Psalm 119:130 KJV)

And just as she sweeps the house, there is a picture of thoroughness, nothing left unexamined. God’s work in drawing people to Himself is not careless or incomplete. He seeks with purpose.

For us, this parable is both comforting and challenging. It reminds us that we are never beyond God’s reach, even when we feel hidden or forgotten. At the same time, it calls us to reflect His heart, valuing what He values, seeking what He seeks, and rejoicing when what is lost is found.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that I am never overlooked by You. Even when I feel hidden or far away, You see me and seek me. Shine Your light into every part of my life, and draw me closer to You. And give me a heart that values others as You do, ready to seek, to care, and to rejoice when they are found. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
