Daily Devotion: Love One Another — The Overflow of Abiding by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: John 15:9-16 KJV

Key Verse:  "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you." - John 15:12 KJV

Love Is the Evidence of Abiding

When we abide in Christ, His life flows through us, and that life is marked by love.

Love is not optional; it is a command and a result:

  • A command we are called to obey
  • A result of staying connected to Christ

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God…” (1 John 4:7, KJV)

The Standard of Our Love

“…as I have loved you.” (John 15:12, KJV)

Jesus sets the standard, not human love, but His love.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13, KJV)

His love is:

  • Sacrificial
  • Selfless
  • Unconditional

Love Flows from Abiding, Not Effort Alone

Trying to love others in our own strength leads to:

  • Frustration
  • Burnout
  • Inconsistency

But when we abide, love flows naturally.

Galatians 5:22

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love…” (Galatians 5:22, KJV)

Love is not something we produce, it is something the Spirit produces in us.

Love Shows We Belong to Christ

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:35, KJV)

Love is the identifying mark of a true follower of Christ.

It is not:

  • Knowledge alone
  • Words alone
  • Actions alone

It is love expressed through all of these.

Love in Action

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” (1 John 3:18, KJV)

Real love:

  • Forgives
  • Serves
  • Gives
  • Shows kindness even when it’s difficult

Love Covers and Endures

“…for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8, KJV)

Christ-like love is not fragile, it is enduring.

“Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:7, KJV)

Reflection

We cannot truly love others the way Christ commands unless we are first abiding in Him.

The question is not:

“Am I trying hard enough to love?”

But:

“Am I staying close enough to Christ for His love to flow through me?”

Prayer

Lord, teach me to love as You have loved me. Help me to abide in You so that Your love flows through my life. Remove selfishness, impatience, and pride from my heart. Fill me with Your Spirit, that I may love others in truth and action. Let my life reflect Your love to those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
