After the wonder of His birth, the early years of Jesus’ life are mostly quiet in Scripture. Yet one moment shines through, a glimpse into His growing awareness of His identity and purpose. At twelve years old, Jesus traveled with Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem for the Passover, as was their custom. But on the return journey, something unexpected happened, Jesus stayed behind.
After searching anxiously for Him, His parents found Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening and asking questions. Even at this young age, there was something remarkable about Him.
Those who heard Him were astonished, not only at His understanding, but at His answers.
“And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.”

When Mary questioned Him, there was no rebellion in His response, only clarity about who He was and why He had come.
“And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

Even as a boy, Jesus understood His relationship with the Father. His life was not directionless, it was anchored in a divine purpose. He knew He belonged to the Father and was committed to His will.
Yet what follows is just as important. Though He was the Son of God, He returned home and lived in obedience to His earthly parents.
“And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them…”

Jesus, in His humanity, submitted to the ordinary rhythms of life, growing, learning, and preparing for the ministry that lay ahead.
“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”
— Luke 2:52 (KJV)
This reminds us that spiritual growth often happens in quiet, unseen seasons. Before the miracles, before the crowds, before the cross, there were years of faithful preparation.
Scripture encourages us in the same way:
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart… and he shall direct thy paths.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
Jesus’ example teaches us that knowing God’s purpose begins with seeking Him. Even in youth, even in ordinary moments, we can be about our Father’s business, learning, growing, and walking in obedience.
Not every season is public or dramatic. Some are quiet, steady, and hidden. But those seasons matter. God is shaping hearts, building character, and preparing us for what is to come.
And just as Jesus grew in wisdom and favor, so can we, when we stay close to the Father and commit ourselves to His will.
