After years of quiet preparation, the time came for Jesus to step into His public ministry. He did not begin with miracles or teaching crowds, but by coming to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. John the Baptist had been sent to prepare the way, calling people to repentance. When Jesus came to him, John was hesitant, recognizing who stood before him.
Yet Jesus insisted, not because He had sin to repent of, but to fulfill all righteousness and to identify with those He came to save.
“And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.”

As Jesus was baptized, a powerful moment unfolded, one that revealed the presence of the entire Godhead.
“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Here we see the Son being baptized, the Spirit descending, and the Father speaking. It is a moment of divine affirmation. Before Jesus preached a sermon or performed a miracle, the Father declared His pleasure in Him.
This reminds us of something deeply important: identity comes before activity. Jesus was affirmed as the Son before His ministry began.
Scripture echoes this truth for believers as well:
“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God…”

Jesus’ baptism also sets an example of obedience. Though He was sinless, He chose to follow the will of the Father fully and publicly. In doing so, He showed us the importance of surrendering to God’s plan.
“Then said I, Lo, I come… to do thy will, O God.”

And it reminds us of the role of the Holy Spirit. Just as the Spirit descended upon Jesus, believers are also given the Spirit to guide, strengthen, and empower them.
“Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

The baptism of Jesus marks the beginning of His public mission, but it begins not with action, but with obedience, humility, and identity.
Before anything else, He submitted to the Father.
And for us, the lesson is clear: before we do anything for God, we must first be surrendered to Him. When we walk in obedience and understand who we are in Him, we are prepared for whatever He calls us to do.
The same God who declared His love over His Son invites us to walk in that same relationship, grounded not in what we do, but in who we belong to.
