In the quiet opening of Scripture, before time was measured and before the world had form, we are introduced to a simple yet profound truth: God is. There is no explanation of His origin, no defense of His existence, only the declaration of His authority and power.
Everything begins with Him. The universe is not chaos without meaning; it is the intentional work of a sovereign Creator. Where there was emptiness and darkness, God spoke, and His word brought light, order, and life.
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”

Over and over through this chapter, we see a pattern: God speaks, and it is so. His word is powerful, effective, and absolute. Darkness cannot resist it. Chaos cannot withstand it. What God commands comes into being.
This same truth echoes throughout Scripture:
“By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”

As the days of creation unfold, we see God bringing order out of disorder—separating light from darkness, land from sea, and filling the earth with life. Each step is intentional, each act declared “good.” Creation is not random; it reflects the goodness and wisdom of its Creator.
But the pinnacle of creation comes when God forms man.

Unlike the rest of creation, humanity is made in God’s image. This gives life dignity, purpose, and meaning. You are not an accident, you are designed to reflect Him, to know Him, and to walk in relationship with Him.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

God not only created man, but He blessed him and gave him responsibility. From the very beginning, we see that God desires partnership with His creation, a relationship marked by trust, stewardship, and obedience.
At the close of creation, God looks over all He has made—not just parts of it, but the whole, and declares it “very good.”
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”

This chapter reminds us of several powerful truths. First, God is the source of all things. Second, His word has the power to bring light into darkness, both in creation and in our lives. And third, we are created with purpose, made in His image, and called to reflect His glory.
Even today, when life feels chaotic or uncertain, the God of Genesis 1 still speaks. He is still bringing light into darkness, still creating order out of confusion, still working with purpose and intention.
“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts…”

So when you feel surrounded by darkness, remember the beginning. The same God who said, “Let there be light,” can speak into your life today. And when He speaks, light always comes.
