Daily Devotion: The Parable of the Hidden Treasure (The Incomparable Value of the Kingdom) by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Matthew 13:44-51 KJV

Key Verse:  "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field."
- Matthew 13:44 KJV

Jesus continued to unfold the nature of the kingdom of heaven with another brief but powerful picture. He spoke of a man who, while going about his ordinary work in a field, suddenly discovered something unexpected—a treasure hidden beneath the surface. It had been there all along, unseen and unnoticed, until that very moment.

The discovery changed everything. Realizing the immense value of what he had found, the man carefully hid it again. Then, filled with joy, he went and sold all that he had in order to buy that field. To anyone watching, his actions might have seemed extreme, even unreasonable. But they did not see what he had seen. They did not understand the worth of the treasure.

In this simple story, Jesus reveals the surpassing value of the kingdom of God. It is not merely something to be added to life—it is something worth giving everything for. When its true worth is seen, sacrifice is no longer a burden, but a joy.

Scripture echoes this same truth in the life of those who have come to know God. Paul wrote, “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord…” (Philippians 3:8 KJV). When Christ is truly known, everything else is seen in a different light.

There is also a sense of urgency and decisiveness in the man’s response. He did not delay or hesitate. He acted with purpose because he understood what was at stake. Jesus calls for that same wholehearted devotion: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33 KJV). The kingdom is not meant to be secondary—it is to be first.

And yet, this response flows from joy, not obligation. The man sold all for joy thereof. This is the beauty of the gospel: what we gain in Christ far outweighs anything we leave behind. As Jesus said elsewhere, “Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33 KJV). But what we receive in Him is infinitely greater.

The parable invites us to consider a simple but searching question: how do we value the kingdom of God? Is it something we admire from a distance, or something we are willing to pursue at any cost?

The treasure is still hidden to many—not because it is absent, but because it has not yet been truly seen. But to those whose eyes are opened, it becomes everything.

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to see the true value of Your kingdom. Give me a heart that treasures You above all else. Help me to follow You with joy, not holding back, but gladly surrendering anything that stands in the way. Thank You that what is found in You is greater than anything this world can offer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
