Daily Devotion: The Life of Jesus - Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: John 6:5-12 KJV

Key Verse:  "And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would."
- John 6:11 KJV

In a remote place with thousands gathered, the disciples saw a problem, not enough food. Jesus saw an opportunity, a chance to reveal God’s provision. When Jesus said, “Give ye them to eat,” the disciples immediately focused on what they lacked. Five loaves and two fishes seemed insignificant compared to the need. Andrew even asked, “What are they among so many?”

But Jesus never asked for abundance—He asked for what they had.

The small lunch of a boy, placed in the hands of Jesus, became more than enough. After giving thanks, Jesus multiplied it so that everyone was filled, and still there were twelve baskets left over. This is the nature of God’s provision—not barely enough, but overflowing.

Notice also the order: Jesus blessed it, broke it, and then gave it. Often in our lives, God blesses us, allows us to be “broken” or stretched, and then uses us to bless others.

This miracle points beyond physical bread to a deeper truth. Later in John 6, Jesus reveals that He is the Bread of Life—the only One who can truly satisfy the hunger of the soul.

Life Application

  • Give what you have to God — even if it seems small
  • Trust God to multiply your efforts
  • Thank Him before you see the provision
  • Look to Jesus as your true source of satisfaction

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being my provider. Help me to trust You with what I have, even when it feels insufficient. Take my life, multiply it for Your glory, and use me to meet the needs of others. Amen.
