Daily Devotion: The Life of Jesus - Jesus Before the Sanhedrin and Peter’s Denial by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Matthew 26:62-70 KJV

Key Verse:  "But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest."
- Matthew 26:70 KJV

As Jesus is brought before the Sanhedrin, the highest religious court, injustice unfolds. False witnesses are brought forward, accusations are twisted, and the outcome is already decided. Through it all, Jesus remains remarkably silent. When finally asked directly if He is the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus answers truthfully, even though He knows it will lead to His condemnation. He stands firm in truth, regardless of the cost.

Meanwhile, in the courtyard, a different struggle is taking place.

Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, faces a moment of pressure. Earlier, he boldly declared he would never deny Jesus. Yet now, confronted by simple questions, fear takes over.

Three times, he denies even knowing Him.

Then, the rooster crows.

At that moment, Jesus turns and looks at Peter. No words are recorded, just a look. A look that brings conviction, sorrow, and realization. Peter remembers… and breaks down, weeping bitterly.

This passage reveals two powerful truths:

  • Jesus remains faithful under pressure
  • Peter, though sincere, falters in fear

And yet, Peter’s story doesn’t end here. His tears are not the end, they are the beginning of restoration.

Life Application

  • Stand for truth, even when it’s costly
  • Be aware of your spiritual weaknesses
  • When you fail, turn back to Jesus in repentance
  • Remember that failure is not final with God

Prayer

Lord, give me courage to stand for You, even in difficult moments. When I fall short, help me to turn back to You with a repentant heart. Thank You for Your mercy and the promise of restoration. Amen.
