Key Verse: "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." - Acts 15:11 KJV
The early church had reached an important crossroads. The gospel was spreading rapidly among the Gentiles, but a disagreement arose over a fundamental question: Did Gentile believers have to follow the Law of Moses in order to be saved?Some believers insisted that circumcision and obedience to the Jewish law were necessary for salvation. The apostles and elders gathered in Jerusalem to consider the matter. This gathering became known as the Jerusalem Council.
Peter stood and reminded them of what God had already demonstrated through Cornelius and the Gentiles. God had given them the Holy Ghost “even as he did unto us.”
Then Peter made the central point:
“We believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved…”
Salvation is not something we earn by keeping religious rules. It is a gift of God's grace received through faith in Jesus Christ.
This does not mean obedience is unimportant. Rather, obedience is the result of salvation, not the price of obtaining it.
The council ultimately agreed that Gentile believers should not be burdened with requirements God had not placed upon them. They sent a letter explaining their decision and encouraging the Gentile churches.
There is another important lesson here: the leaders did not settle this dispute through pride or personal preference. They listened, discussed the Scriptures, considered God's work, and sought the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Disagreements will arise among God's people. The answer is not always to divide or become angry. We should seek truth together with humility, prayer, Scripture, and a willingness to follow God's direction.
At the heart of the council's decision was the beautiful simplicity of the gospel:
We are saved by the grace of Jesus Christ.
Life Application
- Remember that salvation is by grace through faith
- Do not add human requirements to God's gospel
- Seek God's wisdom when disagreements arise
- Listen carefully before forming conclusions
- Let Scripture and the Holy Spirit guide your decisions
- Extend the same grace to others that God has extended to you
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the grace You have given us through Jesus Christ. Keep me from trusting in my own works or accomplishments for salvation. Help me to rest in Christ and to live obediently because of the grace I have received. Give Your church wisdom, humility, and unity when disagreements arise. May we always keep the gospel of Your grace at the center. Amen.
