Daily Devotion: The Life of Jesus - Jesus Teaches on Humility by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Matthew 18:1-8 KJV

Key Verse:  "Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
- Matthew 18:4 KJV

Even after witnessing Jesus’ miracles and hearing His teaching, the disciples struggled with a very human question: “Who is the greatest?” Instead of correcting them with harsh words, Jesus gives a powerful illustration. He brings a little child into their midst. In that culture, children had no status, no power, and no influence. Yet Jesus points to this child and says that greatness in God’s kingdom looks like this.

True greatness is not about position, it’s about humility.

Jesus goes even further: “Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” This is not childishness, but childlikeness with trust, dependence, and a lack of pride.

Then He redefines leadership: “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be… servant of all.” In God’s kingdom, the path up is down. Honor comes through humility. Influence comes through service.

This teaching challenges everything the world promotes. The world says, “Promote yourself.” Jesus says, “Humble yourself.” The world says, “Be first.” Jesus says, “Be a servant.”

Life Application

  • Choose humility daily — in attitude and actions
  • Serve others willingly — even when unnoticed
  • Trust God like a child — with dependence and faith
  • Let God be the one who lifts you up

Prayer

Lord, teach me true humility. Remove pride from my heart and help me to serve others with a willing spirit. Give me a childlike faith that trusts You fully, and shape my life according to Your ways. Amen.
