Key Verse: "And James and John, the
sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou
shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire."

Just after Jesus speaks about His coming suffering, James and John make a bold request: they want positions of honor in His glory. Their desire reveals a misunderstanding, they are still thinking in terms of earthly status and recognition. Jesus responds with patience and truth. He asks if they are willing to share in His “cup,” a symbol of suffering and sacrifice. Though they confidently say yes, they do not yet fully grasp what that means.
The other disciples become upset, likely because they share the same ambition. This moment exposes a common human struggle: the desire to be recognized, elevated, and important.
Jesus uses this opportunity to redefine greatness.
In the world, greatness is measured by power and authority. But in God’s kingdom, greatness is measured by service and humility. “Whosoever will be great… shall be your minister.”
Then Jesus points to Himself as the ultimate example:
“The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister…”
The King of kings chose the path of a servant. He didn’t come to demand honor—He came to give His life.
Life Application
- Examine your motives — are you seeking recognition or serving others?
- Choose service over status
- Follow Jesus’ example of humility and sacrifice
- Trust God to place you where He wants you
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I seek recognition instead of serving others. Teach me to follow Your example of humility. Help me to serve with a willing heart, expecting nothing in return. Shape my life according to Your kingdom values. Amen.
