Key Verse: "And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus."
- Matthew 14:29 KJV
In the darkness of night, with waves crashing and the wind against them, the disciples found themselves struggling once again at sea. Then, in the most unexpected way, Jesus came to them, walking on the water. At first, they were afraid. Sometimes God’s presence doesn’t come in the way we expect, and fear can cloud our understanding. But Jesus immediately reassures them: “It is I; be not afraid.”
Peter’s response is both bold and instructive. He doesn’t just want reassurance, he wants to step into what Jesus is doing: “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.” And Jesus simply says, “Come.”
As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he did the impossible, he walked on water. But when he shifted his focus to the wind and waves, fear took over, and he began to sink.
Yet even in failure, there is grace. Peter cried out, “Lord, save me,” and immediately Jesus reached out and caught him.
This moment teaches us that faith is not about perfection, it’s about focus. When our eyes are on Christ, we can stand in the middle of life’s storms. When we focus on circumstances, fear begins to take over.
Life Application
- Step out in faith when Jesus calls you
- Keep your eyes on Christ, not your circumstances
- Cry out to Him when you begin to sink; He responds immediately
- Remember that even small faith can lead to great things
Prayer
Lord, help me to trust You in the storms of life. Give me the courage to step out in faith and keep my eyes fixed on You. When I begin to doubt or fear, remind me to call on You, knowing that You are always there to lift me up. Amen.
