The rich young ruler comes to Jesus with what seems like the perfect question: “What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” He is sincere, respectful, and morally upright. By outward standards, he appears to have everything together.Yet Jesus sees deeper.
After reminding him of the commandments, Jesus lovingly points to the one thing holding his heart: his wealth. “One thing thou lackest…” This wasn’t about money itself, it was about what he valued most.
The young man faced a choice: cling to his possessions or follow Jesus fully. Sadly, he walked away sorrowful, unwilling to surrender what had become an idol in his life.
Jesus then teaches a sobering truth: it is difficult for those who trust in riches to enter God’s kingdom. Wealth can create a false sense of security and independence from God.
But the story doesn’t end in despair. Jesus reminds His disciples, and us, of a powerful truth: “With men it is impossible, but not with God.”
Salvation is not earned through goodness or possessions. It is only possible through God’s grace. Yet following Jesus requires a willing heart, one that is ready to surrender anything that stands in the way.
Life Application
- Examine your heart — is anything taking God’s place?
- Be willing to surrender whatever Jesus asks
- Don’t trust in possessions for security
- Trust in God’s power for salvation and transformation
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal anything that I value more than You. Give me the courage to surrender fully and follow You without hesitation. Help me to trust not in earthly things, but in Your grace and power. Amen.
