After a day of teaching, Jesus and His disciples set out across the Sea of Galilee. What began as a routine journey quickly turned into a life-threatening storm. Isn’t that a familiar feeling? The storms of life rise suddenly, fear, uncertainty, hardship, and it can seem as though God is silent. The disciples, some of them experienced fishermen, were overwhelmed. In panic, they questioned not only their safety, but Jesus’ care for them.
Mark 4:37–38 tells us:
“And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?”
Isn’t that a familiar feeling? The storms of life rise suddenly, fear, uncertainty, hardship, and it can seem as though God is silent. The disciples, some of them experienced fishermen, were overwhelmed. In panic, they questioned not only their safety, but Jesus’ care for them. But Jesus responds with authority over creation itself:
Mark 4:39–40
“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?”
With just a word, the storm obeyed Him. The disciples then asked a profound question:
Mark 4:41
“And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
This moment revealed something deeper than a miracle, it revealed who Jesus is. He is not only a teacher and healer, but Lord over nature and God Himself.
