Daily Devotion: The Many Names of God the Father (2 of 2) by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Psalm 8:1-8 KJV

Key Verse:  "O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens."
- Psalm 8:1 KJV

In the Bible names are far more than labels. They often reveal character, purpose, authority, covenant, and destiny. God uses names to teach spiritual truths and to show His intimate involvement in human lives. The same is true about God's names.

1. Elohim — The Mighty Creator

Meaning: Strong One, Creator, Supreme Power

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

Elohim introduces us to God as the all-powerful Creator. Everything that exists flows from His will and word. This name reminds us that God is sovereign over all creation and able to bring order out of chaos.

Thought: When life feels overwhelming, remember that the God who created the universe is the same God who holds your life in His hands.

2. Jehovah (YHWH) — The Self-Existent One

Meaning: “I AM” — The Eternal, Unchanging God

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM.”
Exodus 3:14 (KJV)

Jehovah declares God’s eternal nature. He is not dependent on anyone or anything. He simply is. This name assures us that God is constant, faithful, and present in every generation.

Thought: Because God is the great “I AM,” He is always enough for whatever you face today.

3. Jehovah-Jireh — The Lord Will Provide

Meaning: God Our Provider

“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh.”
Genesis 22:14 (KJV)

When Abraham trusted God with what was most precious, God revealed Himself as Jehovah-Jireh. He sees our needs before we do and provides in His perfect timing.

Thought: Even when the answer isn’t visible yet, trust that God already has provision prepared.

4. Jehovah-Rapha — The Lord That Heals

Meaning: God Our Healer

“I am the LORD that healeth thee.”
Exodus 15:26 (KJV)

God is not only concerned with physical healing but also spiritual and emotional restoration. He heals broken hearts, wounded souls, and weary spirits.

Thought: Bring every hurt to the Father—no wound is beyond His healing touch.

5. Jehovah-Shalom — The Lord Our Peace

Meaning: God Our Peace

“The LORD is peace.”
Judges 6:24 (KJV)

In a world filled with fear and turmoil, God reveals Himself as our peace. His peace is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of God in the midst of it.

Thought: True peace is found not in circumstances, but in trusting the Lord who reigns over them.

6. Jehovah-Rohi — The Lord My Shepherd

Meaning: God Our Shepherd

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Psalm 23:1 (KJV)

As Shepherd, God guides, protects, and provides for His people. He leads us in righteousness and restores our souls.

Thought: When you feel lost or uncertain, rest in the care of the Good Shepherd who never abandons His flock.

7. El Shaddai — God Almighty

Meaning: All-Sufficient One, Almighty God

“I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”
Genesis 17:1 (KJV)

El Shaddai reveals God’s sufficiency. He is more than enough—stronger than any enemy, greater than any need.

Conclusion

In Scripture, God reveals Himself through His names. Each name is not merely a title, but a window into His nature, authority, and relationship with His people. As we meditate on the names of God the Father, we grow in reverence, trust, and worship.
