From 1 John 4:13 we know, "Hereby we know that we dwell in Him and He in us, because He hath given us of His spirit". The proof of the Holy Spirit in you is not the gifts of the spirit but rather the "fruit of the spirit" found in Galatians 5:22-23. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
In John 3:4b a Pharisees named Nicodemus asked Jesus "How can a man be born when he is old? " Jesus responds by saying in John 3:5-6, "[5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."
The indwelling Spirit confirms to the believer that he belongs to the Lord and is an heir of God and fellow-heir with Christ as so simply stated in Romans 8:16, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:" If the Holy Spirit does not live in you, then there was no salvation - you are not part of the saved few.
