Daily Devotion: Signs Of The End Times by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Matthew 24:23-33 KJV

Key Verse:  "So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors."
- Matthew 24:33 KJV

The Bible contains numerous prophecies and warnings regarding the end times, the period leading up to the return of Jesus Christ. As we explore these passages, we find that God has given us signs to watch for, helping us to recognize the approaching culmination of the age. These signs are not meant to cause fear but to encourage believers to remain faithful and watchful.

Deception and Turmoil

Jesus warned of deception, turmoil, devastation, and tribulation in the end times (Matthew 24:4-14). We see these signs manifesting in our world today. False prophets and teachers abound, leading many astray (Matthew 24:11). Nations rise against nations, and kingdoms against kingdoms, resulting in wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes (Matthew 24:7). These events are not random; they are part of the unfolding of God’s plan.

Shift in Human Nature

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 reminds us that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. In the end times, many will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils (1 Timothy 4:1). This shift in human nature is evident in the increasing rejection of God’s laws and values.

Increase in Natural Disasters

Luke 21:25-26 describes the signs in the sun, moon, and stars, accompanied by distress among nations, perplexity, and roaring seas. We see these natural disasters unfolding before our eyes, from devastating earthquakes to severe weather patterns.

Call to Watchfulness

Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:36-44 emphasize the importance of watchfulness. We must recognize the signs and be prepared for His return. In the end times, Jesus said we would be filled with deception, turmoil, devastation, and tribulation.

A Time of Peril

2 Timothy 3:1-17 describes the perilous times that will come in the last days. We must be aware of the increasing lawlessness, love of self, and contempt for sound doctrine. In this environment, we must stand firm in our faith, just as the saints of old did.

The End Will Come Like A Thief In The Night

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Thessalonians, writes, "[1] But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. [2] For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. [3] For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape" (1 Thessalonians 5:1-3). This passage reminds us that the end times will be characterized by a false sense of security and spiritual deception.

Conclusion

The signs of the end times are all around us. As believers, we must be aware of these signs and respond with watchfulness and faithfulness. We are not to be troubled by the wars, rumors of wars, and natural disasters, but rather to recognize that Jesus is near, right at the door (Matthew 24:33). Do not be afraid. Things are not falling apart, instead they are falling in place. In the end Jesus wins. Let us heed the warning and be prepared for His return.
