Daily Devotion: True Worship Requires Sacrifice by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 24:18-25 KJV

Key Verse:  "And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver."
- 2 Samuel 24:24 KJV

Worship is a central aspect of the Christian life, but what does it truly mean to worship God? The Bible paints a picture of worship that goes beyond mere words or actions and requires a sacrifice of our time, resources, and, ultimately, ourselves. In our Key Verse above, King David put it best when he said that he would not offer to God something that cost him nothing.

In the Old Testament, we find that true worship often involved sacrifices. When the Israelites built the tabernacle, they brought offerings of gold, silver, and various materials to construct it (Exodus 35:5-9). These sacrifices were not merely monetary but represented their devotion and submission to God.

In the New Testament, Jesus teaches that true worship involves a sacrifice of our pride and self-reliance. When the Samaritan woman asked Him about the proper place to worship, Jesus responded, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). This verse emphasizes that true worship comes from a heart that is humble, dependent on God, and aligned with His truth.

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans, writes, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." (Romans 12:1). This passage calls us to offer our entire lives,  our thoughts, our words, our actions, and even our physical bodies, as living sacrifices to God. This is the highest form of worship, as it involves surrendering our entire being to God and trusting Him with every aspect of our lives.

True worship requires a sacrifice, not merely of our possessions or time, but of ourselves. It involves Humbly acknowledging our dependence on God, aligning our lives with His truth, and surrendering our entire being to Him in worship. True worship requires a sacrifice because it demands our wholehearted devotion. It’s not just about attending church services or singing hymns; it’s about surrendering our lives to God’s purposes and plans. It’s about embracing His will, even when it’s hard or uncomfortable.

As we worship, let us remember that it’s not just about us; it is about God. Let us offer ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to Him. Let us prioritize obedience and compassion over mere rituals or offerings. And let us imitate Jesus’ example, giving ourselves fully to God, just as He gave Himself fully for us.
