Daily Devotion: The Coming Kingdom by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Matthew 4:17-24 KJV

Key Verse:  "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
- Matthew 4:17 KJV

When Jesus stepped onto the scene, His first public message wasn’t about politics, morality, or self-improvement. It was about a Kingdom“From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)

What Is the Kingdom?

In the Gospels, you’ll see two phrases:

  • Kingdom of Heaven (used often in Matthew)

  • Kingdom of God (used throughout the other Gospels)

For example:

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:3 (KJV)

These phrases are used interchangeably in parallel accounts. Compare:

“How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!”
Mark 10:23 (KJV)

with

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”
Matthew 19:24 (KJV)

Matthew, writing to a Jewish audience, often used “heaven” out of reverence for God’s name. But both expressions point to the same reality: God’s sovereign rule.

The Kingdom is not merely a place. It is the reign of God over hearts, lives, and ultimately all creation.

The Kingdom Is Within and Coming

Jesus made a profound statement:

“The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

Luke 17:20–21 (KJV)

The Kingdom begins internally. It is not first political—it is spiritual. It advances whenever a heart bows to Christ.

Yet it is also future and visible:

“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:10 (KJV)

There is a present Kingdom (Christ ruling now in believers) and a coming Kingdom (Christ ruling openly over all).

Entering the Kingdom

Jesus made entry into the Kingdom unmistakably clear:

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:3 (KJV)

The Kingdom is not inherited by heritage, morality, or effort. It is entered through new birth—a spiritual transformation brought by faith in Christ.

And once we belong to this Kingdom, our priorities shift:

“For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”
Romans 14:17 (KJV)

Notice those three marks:

  • Righteousness – Right standing and right living

  • Peace – Rest in God’s rule

  • Joy – Deep gladness in His Spirit

That is Kingdom life.

Living as Kingdom People

If God is truly King, it shows.

Kingdom citizens forgive differently.
They love enemies.
They store treasure in heaven.
They seek His rule before their own comfort.

Jesus said:

“Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
Luke 12:32 (KJV)

What a promise. The Kingdom is not wrestled from God—it is given by Him.

A Closing Reflection

The Kingdom of Heaven is not merely someday.
It is every day you submit to Christ’s rule.

It is present whenever:

  • His will overrides your pride,

  • His peace quiets your fear,

  • His joy steadies your heart.

And one day, what is now spiritual will become visible:

“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
Revelation 11:15 (KJV)

Until that day, we pray.
We seek.
We live under the reign of the King.

Is He ruling fully in you today?

Are you Saved?
