Daily Devotion: Jesus' Two Great Commandments by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Matthew 22:32-40 KJV

Key Verse:  "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
- Matthew 22:40 KJV

When asked which commandment was the greatest, Jesus did not hesitate. He did not choose a ceremonial law or a complex rule. He chose love. These two commandments are not suggestions. They are the foundation. Jesus said that all the Law and the Prophets hang on them. Every command, every teaching, every moral instruction flows from loving God and loving others.

1. Loving God with All

Notice the word “all.”
     All thy heart.
     All thy soul.
     All thy mind.

God does not ask for leftovers. He asks for wholehearted devotion. Loving God means:

  • Trusting Him in every circumstance.

  • Obeying His Word even when it is difficult.

  • Worshiping Him not just with lips, but with life.

Jesus said:

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
John 14:15 (KJV)

Love for God is not merely emotion, it is demonstrated in obedience, faithfulness, and surrender.

2. Loving Your Neighbour as Yourself

The second commandment is “like unto it.” In other words, you cannot separate love for God from love for people. The Apostle John wrote:

“If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar.”
1 John 4:20 (KJV)

To love your neighbor as yourself means:

  • Showing mercy instead of judgment.

  • Offering forgiveness instead of resentment.

  • Serving others with humility.

Jesus deepened this teaching when He said:

“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you.”
John 13:34 (KJV)

Christ loved sacrificially. He loved patiently. He loved to the cross. That is the measure.

Living the Two Commandments

Every day we face choices—how to respond, how to speak, how to act. A simple question can guide us:

  • Does this show love for God?

  • Does this show love for others?

If the answer is yes, we are walking in obedience. If not, we must realign our hearts.

The Christian life is not primarily about rule-keeping; it is about relationship—loving God deeply and loving others sincerely. When love governs the heart, righteousness follows.
