Daily Devotion: Bible Word – Perdition by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Philippians 1:23-30 KJV

Key Verse:  "And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God."
- Philippians 1:28 KJV

The word perdition is a sobering one. It means destruction, ruin, or eternal loss. In Scripture, it points not just to physical death, but to spiritual separation from God, a final and irreversible state for those who reject His truth.

Jesus spoke plainly about the reality of two paths: one leading to life, and the other to destruction.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:” — Matthew 7:13 (KJV)

Perdition is not God’s desire for anyone. It is the outcome of a life that turns away from Him, choosing sin over salvation, darkness over light. God’s heart is always toward redemption, not ruin.

“The Lord is… not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” — 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV)

Yet Scripture is clear, there are those who reject Christ and walk the path that leads to perdition. One of the most striking examples is Judas Iscariot, referred to as “the son of perdition.”

“Those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition…” — John 17:12 (KJV)

This reminds us that proximity to truth is not the same as surrendering to it. Judas walked with Jesus, heard His words, and saw His miracles, yet his heart remained unchanged.

Perdition is not merely about punishment, it is about separation. To be apart from God, who is the source of life, light, and love, is the greatest loss imaginable.

But the gospel shines brightest against this dark backdrop: we are not destined for perdition if we are in Christ.

“For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,” — 1 Thessalonians 5:9 (KJV)

Through Jesus, the path of destruction is replaced with the path of life. What was once heading toward ruin can be redeemed and restored.

Conclusion and Prayer

Take time to examine your heart. Are you merely familiar with God, or truly surrendered to Him? The difference is eternal. The warning of perdition is real, but so is the promise of salvation.

Lord, thank You for rescuing me from the path of destruction. Open my eyes to the seriousness of sin and the beauty of Your salvation. Keep my heart tender and fully surrendered to You. Help me walk the narrow path that leads to life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Are you Saved?
