Daily Devotion: Bible Word – Justified by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Romans 3:28 KJV

Key Verse:  "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law."
- Romans 3:28 KJV

To be justified means to be declared righteous in the sight of God. It is a legal term, like a judge pronouncing a verdict. In God’s courtroom, justification is not about us becoming instantly perfect, but about God crediting righteousness to us through faith. In short, Justified means being declared righteous before God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Justified by Faith, Not Works

The Bible is clear that justification is not something we earn:

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” — Romans 5:1 (KJV)

We are not justified by good deeds, religious effort, or moral striving. Instead, we are justified by faith, trusting fully in what Christ has done.

The Problem We All Share

Before justification, we stand guilty:

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” — Romans 3:23 (KJV)

Every person falls short. No amount of personal righteousness can remove that guilt. Left on our own, we cannot justify ourselves.

God’s Gift of Grace

Justification is a gift freely given:

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” — Romans 3:24 (KJV)

Notice the word freely. We do not pay for it, earn it, or deserve it. It flows from God’s grace, His unmerited favor.

The Great Exchange

At the heart of justification is a divine exchange:

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)

Christ took our sin upon Himself, and in return, we receive His righteousness. When God looks at those who are in Christ, He sees not our guilt, but Christ’s perfection.

No More Condemnation

Justification changes our standing forever:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…” — Romans 8:1 (KJV)

This means the verdict is final. The believer is no longer under judgment. The case is closed, declared righteous.

Living as the Justified

Being justified is not the end; it is the beginning of a new life:

“The just shall live by faith.” — Romans 1:17 (KJV)

We continue in the same way we began, by faith. Our lives become a response of gratitude, walking in obedience not to earn God’s favor, but because we already have it.

Reflection and Prayer

Questions to ponder: Are you trying to earn what God has already offered freely? Do you truly believe that you are fully forgiven and declared righteous in Christ? How would your daily life change if you lived in the peace of being justified?

Father, Thank You for the gift of justification through Jesus Christ. I know that I cannot earn righteousness on my own, but You have freely given it through faith. Help me to rest in the truth that I am forgiven and no longer condemned. Teach me to live each day in faith, reflecting the grace You have shown me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Are you Saved?
