Daily Devotion: Bible Word – Propitiation by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Romans 3:25 KJV

Key Verse:  "Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;"
- Romans 3:25 KJV

Propitiation is a deep and powerful word that means the turning away of wrath by the offering of a sacrifice. In the Bible, it refers to how Jesus Christ satisfied the righteous judgment of God against sin. God is holy and just, and sin must be punished, but in His love, He provided a way for that judgment to be fulfilled without destroying us. Jesus became that sacrifice.

Christ Took Our Place

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” — 1 John 4:10

Notice the order: God loved us first. We didn’t earn this. We didn’t deserve it. While we were still sinners, Christ stepped in and took upon Himself the punishment that was meant for us. The wrath of God that should have fallen on us was poured out on Jesus instead.

This is not just forgiveness—it is justice satisfied and mercy extended at the same time.

The Blood That Covers

“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” — 1 John 2:2

Under the Old Testament, sacrifices were made again and again. But Jesus’ sacrifice was once and for all. His blood didn’t just cover sin temporarily—it dealt with it completely. Through Him, we are no longer under condemnation.

Living in the Freedom of Propitiation

Because Christ has already satisfied God’s wrath:

  • You don’t have to live in fear of judgment
  • You don’t have to strive to earn God’s favor
  • You can rest in the finished work of Jesus

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…” — Romans 8:1

Conclusion

Propitiation reminds us that salvation is not about what we do, instead it is about what Christ has done. The cross is where justice and love met. God did not ignore sin; He dealt with it fully through Jesus. When you feel guilt, shame, or fear, remember: the price has already been paid.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for sending Your Son to be the propitiation for my sins. I know I could never satisfy Your justice on my own, but Jesus did it for me. Help me to live in the freedom, peace, and gratitude that comes from knowing I am forgiven and no longer under condemnation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
