Daily Devotion: Becoming Desensitized To Sin by J.E. Smith

Bible Reading: Judges 16:13-20 KJV

Key Verse:  "And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him."
- Judges 16:20 KJV

The human heart is shaped by what it repeatedly sees and hears. When we allow ourselves to remain around sin, whether in our environment, our entertainment, our conversations, or our habits, our conscience can slowly grow dull. What once troubled us may begin to feel normal. Scripture warns us about this subtle but dangerous process.

At first, sin may shock our conscience. But over time, familiarity weakens our resistance. The Bible describes how sin can harden the heart and deceive the mind.

Hebrews 3:13 (KJV)
“But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”

Sin is deceptive. It rarely appears destructive at the beginning. Instead, it slowly persuades us that something is acceptable or harmless. As we linger near it, our spiritual sensitivity fades.

King David described the gradual progression toward sin:

Psalm 1:1 (KJV)
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

Notice the progression: walk, stand, then sit. What begins as passing exposure can become settled comfort. This is why Scripture repeatedly warns believers to guard their hearts and separate themselves from sinful influences.

1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV)
“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”

The people and influences around us shape our attitudes and behavior more than we often realize. If we continually surround ourselves with sinful attitudes, we gradually begin to tolerate them and eventually imitate them.

The danger of desensitization is that it numbs our spiritual awareness. When the conscience grows quiet, conviction fades. Paul spoke of those whose moral sense had become nearly unresponsive.

Ephesians 4:19 (KJV)
“Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”

God never intended for His people to grow comfortable with sin. Instead, He calls us to pursue holiness and guard our hearts.

Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

The good news is that God provides strength to resist sin and renew a sensitive heart. When we stay close to Him through His Word, prayer, and fellowship with believers, our spiritual discernment remains sharp.

James 4:7 (KJV)
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

In our key verse above Samson was defeated after he became so comfortable with Delilah's pleas for the secret to his strength. Eventually he gave in to her and revealed that which would lead to his destruction. He became desensitized and comfortable with her while God was so distant from him, he did not even realize God had departed from him.

Lord, help me to guard my heart and not grow comfortable around sin. Keep my conscience sensitive to Your Spirit. Give me wisdom to avoid influences that dull my love for righteousness, and strengthen me to walk in holiness each day.

Are you Saved?
