Key Verse: "And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement."
- Romans 5:11 KJV
The word atonement carries a beautiful, life-changing meaning: it is the act of making reconciliation between God and man. Sin created a separation, an unbridgeable gap between a holy God and fallen humanity. But through atonement, that gap is closed.
In the Old Testament, atonement required sacrifice. Blood had to be shed as a covering for sin. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest would offer sacrifices for the people, symbolizing the need for cleansing and forgiveness.
“For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls...” — Leviticus 17:11 (KJV)
These sacrifices, however, were temporary. They pointed forward to something greater, to someone greater. That someone is Jesus Christ.
When Jesus went to the cross, He didn’t merely cover sin, He paid for it in full. His sacrifice was perfect, once and for all. He took upon Himself the punishment we deserved, satisfying the justice of God while extending mercy to us.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (KJV)
Through Christ’s atoning work, we are no longer separated from God. We are brought near, forgiven, and made clean.
“And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” — Romans 5:11 (KJV)
Atonement is not something we earn, it is something we receive. It is a gift of grace. Jesus stood in our place, bore our sin, and opened the way for us to be reconciled to God.
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” — 1 Peter 2:24 (KJV)
Conclusion and Prayer
Consider the depth of what Christ has done for you. Every sin, past, present, and future, was accounted for at the cross. There is no debt left unpaid for those who are in Him.
Thank You Lord for the atonement made through Jesus Christ. Thank You for loving me enough to send Your Son to take my place. Help me to live in the freedom, gratitude, and righteousness that Your sacrifice has made possible. Draw me closer to You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
